Bacterial Community Structure of an IFAS-MBRs Wastewater Treatment Plant

TIn this work, the bacterial community putatively involved in BNR events of a UCT-MBMBR pilot plant was elucidated by both culture-dependent and metagenomics DNA analyses. The presence of bacterial isolates belonging to Bacillus (in the anoxic compartment) and to Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Rhodococcus, Escherichia and Aeromonas (in the aerobic compartment) is in agreement with the nitrification/denitrification processes observed in the plant. Moreover, the study of bacterial community structure by NGS revealed a microbial diversity suggesting a biochemical complexity which can be further explored and exploited to improve UCT-MBMBR plant performance.

In this study, the presence of microplastics in the sludge of three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) was examined. The investigated WWTPs operated based on a conventional activated sludge (CAS) process, with (W1) or without (W2) primary clarification, and a membrane bioreactor process (MBR) (W3). The microplastics (MPs) concentration in the samples of W3 was approximately 81.1 ± 4.2 × 103 particles/kg dry sludge, whereas MPs concentrations in W1 and W2 were 46.0 ± 14.8 × 103 particles/kg dry sludge and 36.0 ± 5.2 × 103 particles/kg dry sludge, respectively. A Graphical User Interface as a DSS Tool for GHG Emission Estimation from Water Resource Recovery Facilities

A Grafical User Interface (GUI) for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from WWTPs based on four models aimed at quantifying the gas emissions from the aerated tanks (i.e. CAS and MBR reactor), aerobic digesters, secondary clarifiers and anaerobic digesters have been englobed in a GUI in order to provide a valid decision support system (DSS) to the practitioners. The GUI allows to estimate such emissions for the different WWTP phases considered. The GUI has been developed on MATLAB platform and provides as output the GHG emissions in terms of CO2 and N2O fluxes.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals in municipal wastewater treatment plants and receiving surface waters in Central and Southern Finland

The presence of five selected pharmaceuticals, four anti-inflammatory drugs, diclofenac, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, and an antiepileptic drug carbamazepine, was determined at four municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and in the receiving waterway near the city of Jyväskylä, in central Finland and also in the River Vantaa. In urban drainage modelling, uncertainty analysis is of undoubted necessity; however, several methodological aspects need to be clarified and deserve to be investigated in the future, especially in water quality modelling. Recent studies about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions show that sewer collection systems and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are anthropogenic GHG potential sources.
